In 2004 the Government introduced an initiative called 'Every Child Matters' which is a new approach to the well being of all children and young people from birth to 19. It aims for every child, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support they need to reach 5 specific key outcomes:
be healthy - enjoying good physical and mental health and living a healthy lifestyle
stay safe - being protected from harm and neglect
enjoy and achieve - getting the most out of life and developing the skills for adulthood
make a positive contribution - being involved with the community and society and not engaging in anti-social or offending behaviour
achieve economic well-being - not being prevented by economic disadvantage from achieving their full potential in life.
Schools are required by law to take specific steps to improve these outcomes for all pupils through the curriculum, projects that they are involved in or opportunities that they have in school.
At Devonshire, these outcomes run throughout the School, both in its ethos and curriculum. In addition to the curriculum that the children are taught, there are a number of initiatives that support these outcomes. These include
- The Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning Programme that all children are involved in
- Visits from the Police and the Fire Brigade
- A variety of extra curricular activities
- A variety of School trips, within the local area and further afield
- The School's involvement in a variety of 'food and growing' related projects as part of the Food for Life Partnership
- Children's involvement in a variety fund raising activities
- Visiting and supporting local communities eg:delivering a fruit basket to Sutton Hospital, singing carols at a local old people's home.
- Visiting local businesses
- An active School Council
- Anti-bullying week
- The School's involvement in the Healthy Schools' Scheme
- Year 6's involvement in the Junior Citizenship Day
- Year 6's involvement in the Cycling Proficiency Scheme
- The School's support for the Walking to School Scheme
- The annual award of the Roger de la Perrelle Ambassador trophy for being an excellent ambassador for Devonshire
