School Council on their trip to the Houses of Parliament

On Tuesday 3rd March 2009, the School Council went to the Houses of Parliament. We went there for a tour and to ask questions to our local MP, Paul Burstow. We went there by train, accompanied by a short walk.  After having a security photo taken we went inside for the start of the tour.  After a short history of the Houses of Parliament we were taken to the Queen's room where she rested before opening Parliament.  In it was her chair that was incredibly small. This is because Queen Victoria used it and she was only 4 foot 7 inches tall.  There was also a hidden passage in this room. Next we visited the House of Lords and saw a throne made of gold leaf; all of the fabric in this part of Parliament was red. In the House of Commons everything was green and there were lines at either side of the room that should not be crossed by the members of the parties debating.  At the end of the tour we were taken up in a lift, had our lunch and met with Paul Burstow.  We asked him lots of questions about Sutton and Cheam and how he was going to improve them.  We had a good day and found out a lot of interesting facts. By Lucian Heeler, School Councillor for 6M.

Devonshire had a huge cooking bus parked on site in January 2009. Teaching sessions with specialist cookery teachers ran throughout the week giving the children who worked on board the bus the opportunity to learn how to use a variety of equipment, develop a range of cookery skills and most importantly have fun whilst cooking. The children who worked on the bus had a great time.

The cooking bus was ...

Really fun because we made chick pea salad and butternut squash bread. The bread smelt and tasted delicious. Louis (4M)

Very interesting. The best part of it was making a dish with spinach and cheese which we covered in pastry. Natalie (3C)

Great. We got to cook things and I really like cooking, we made fruit salad and muffins with mashed bananas and apples - they were perfectly scrumptious! Charlotte (2B)
