Core curriculum areas
Literacy
There is a continued focus on vowel sounds, progressing to ‘air’ ‘or’ and ‘ir’. There will be opportunities to explore various formats for writing, including poetry and units on non fiction. As writing develops, children will be encouraged to use openers, connectives and interesting vocabulary. We will use glossaries and dictionaries.
Numeracy
We continue to reinforce the skills of adding and subtracting on the number line, place value and money. There is a greater focus on word problems and methods of solving. We also learn about time and measure. Multiplication and division will be introduced.
Science
Our topics this term will be 'Forces' and 'Health and Growth'. In our work on forces we will investigate pushes and pulls, speeding up and slowing down and investigating forces in a fair test. During the work on health and growth we will look at food groups, healthy eating, animal and human growth, and hazards and dangers to health.
Information and communication technology (ICT)
Our first unit of work will focus on 'Finding Information', where we spend time using the CD Rom Encyclopedias and search engines. Our second topic is Routes, where we will use the floor turtle.
Foundation subjects
History
We will be learning about famous people from the past, which will include Florence Nightingale and Samuel Pepys. This theme will help to develop the children's historical enquiry skills. We will also be linking strands of this work to our literacy sessions and artwork. There will be no geography this term.
Religious education (RE)
We will introduce Islam. We will learn about special places for Muslims such as the Mosque and key people such as Muhammed. We will then learn about special journeys in Christianity and Easter.
Physical education (PE)
We will be doing a games unit, which will develop basic game playing skills-throwing and catching and a range of net, striking and fielding games. In dance we will explore life cycles-composing and performing movement phrases and short dances.
Personal, social and health education (PSHE)
We will be continuing with circle time.In addition we will be continuing our SEAL programme with a unit on ‘Going for Goals’ followed by ‘It’s Good to be Me’. There will be assemblies and classwork linked to these themes.
Art
We will be making 3-D scene of the Great Fire of London and portraits of Florence Nightingale.
Design technology (DT)
There is no DT this term.
You can help at home with
continuing regular reading practice, encouraging children to tell you the time, discussing what makes a balanced diet and researching Florence Nightingale and Samuel Pepys.
