Year 2 Summer term Print E-mail

Introduction

Our overarching themes are ‘An Island Home’ and 'Seaside Holidays in the Past'. During the second half term we will complete our end of Key Stage assessments.This will include some tasks and tests and teacher assessment.

Core curriculum areas

Literacy

This term we will be focusing on the work of some particular authors-Mairi Hedderwick (Katie Morag stories) and Dick King Smith. We will be writing in a variety of genre, including invitations and information leaflets. We will write book reviews. There will be some work on tongue twisters, nonsense rhymes and jokes. For spelling we will be focusing on groups of words - in particular word families and irregular words. There will be some work on words with prefixes (un/dis) suffixes(ful/ly), colour words and months of the year. We will continue our handwriting programme.

Numeracy

We will be doing some work on capacity. We will be exploring right angles. There will be further work with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will learn about rounding numbers up and down, and using/ applying our maths skills to solve number problems and investigations.

Science

We will be covering the topic of Grouping and Changing materials through heating, melting and freezing.  We will look particularly at materials found on a beach.

Information and communication technology (ICT)

Our first unit will be Data Handling using graphs and decision trees.

In our final project there will be opportunities to use word processing, make pictures and use the internet.

Foundation subjects

Geography/History

During the first four weeks our Geography topic will be ‘An Island Home ‘. We will be finding out about the Isle of Coll, off the coast of Scotland and linking this work with the Katie Morag books in literacy. After half term we will be doing a topic on the seaside.  We focus on seaside holidays using maps, atlases and pictures.  We also look at how holidays have changed over time.  At some stage during this term we will have ‘London Week’. Our theme will be ‘Buildings and change’. We will be taking the children on a visit to improve their knowledge of the city.

Religious education (RE)

We will complete a unit on special books with particular reference to Hinduism and explore stories of Krishna. We will then explore the different types of writing found in the Bible – stories, parables and prayers.

Physical education(PE)

In gym we will be travelling, balancing and making simple sequences, on the floor and using apparatus. There will be some athletics (throwing/jumping) in preparation for Sports Day. Our dance work will involve basic body actions to music, creating and performing dances.

Personal, social and health education (PSHE)

Our SEAL themes this term will be relationships and changes. There will be ongoing classwork and assemblies. Our circle time focus will be the transition to Year 3. We will explore children’s feelings and there will be opportunities to meet with and question the current Year 3 pupils.

Art

In London week, we will work on London landscapes. We will also make 3-D lighthouses.

Design Technology (DT)

Children will make a simple beach bag, exploring methods for joining materials, such as stapling, glueing and sewing.

You can help at home

Continue regular reading practice and talk about authors and illustrators when sharing books and looking for information about them on book covers etc. Please also discuss words and word families linked to those above to increase children’s spelling knowledge. Explore capacity and look at labels to see how much containers hold.
