Year 3 Spring term Print E-mail

Introduction

Children will now have adapted to Key Stage 2 and greater emphasis will be placed on presentation and quality of written work. Children will benefit greatly from reading and practising their spellings everyday.

Core curriculum areas

Literacy

We will focus on different types of texts, including myths, legends and traditional stories, poetry from different cultures, note taking and instructions. There will be a weekly spelling test and there will be an emphasis on correct punctuation and grammar in the children’s writing. We will also be emphasising the use of verbs, adjectives and adverbs. The children’s writing targets will be reviewed this term.

The author focus is: Phillip Pullman.

Numeracy

We will work on mental calculation strategies, place value, understanding addition and subtraction, measures and time, word problems and shape and space. Please see the ‘Targets for Children in Year 3’ booklet, which is sent at the beginning of the term, for ideas about how to help your child.

Science

We will be studying 'Magnets and Springs', 'Rocks and Soils'.

Information and communication technology (ICT)

We shall be introducing databases, which include spreadsheets and graphs.

Foundation subjects

Geography

We will be exploring the environment and how to improve and protect it, including issues such as recycling.  As part of the topic we will go on an 'environment walk'.

Religious education (RE)

We will be focusing on rites of passage in Christianity and Judaism.

Physical education (PE)

Net and ball games, gymnastics and dance.

Personal, social and health education (PSHE)

We will be working on developing good relationships and respecting differences between people. We will also focus on topics from the SEAL pack and the whole School initiative for this term is “Going For Goals”.

Art

We shall be looking at how relationships are portrayed in art. This will entail a detailed study of the proportions of the human figure and figure drawings using different mediums (pencil, pastels and paint).

You can help at home

Read with your child regularly and help your child practise weekly spellings.

We will be looking forward to parents volunteering their assistance when the children go swimming. Swimming kits (girls require a swimming cap) are needed for Thursday afternoons in the second half term.
