Year 4 Autumn term Print E-mail

Introduction

We look forward to welcoming children back to School and to everyone making a positive new start in their new class.  We have a busy and exciting time ahead.

Core curriculum areas

Literacy

This term we read books written by Roald Dahl, Philip Ridley and Michael Morpurgo.  We also focus on reading and writing stories with historical settings , which links with our history topic 'The Tudors', and stories set in imaginative worlds.  We look at, and discuss, a variety of styles in poetry, some of which we perform.  Our non fiction unit is writing newspaper reports.  In all our literacy work we always put emphasis on punctuation, accurate spelling, correct grammar and the use of adventurous vocabulary.  Neat presentation is encouraged at all times.

Numeracy

Through scenarios presented by Maths Investigator, children will learn a variety of strategies for developing their number work. We put emphasis on learning tables and being able to calculate mentally. We will study place value, counting and number sequences, calculating (involving the four operations) fractions, handling data, shape and measuring.

Science

We study Friction this term.  This will include practical investigations and we aim for the children to learn scientific vocabulary.

Foundation subjects
Information and communication technology (ICT)

We will be following a unit called 'Writing For Different Audiences', which includes editing and amending text and we use the Internet to research other subject areas.

History

We learn about Henry VIII and how the Tudors lived. A Tudor workshop introduces the topic and the children learn how to play Tudor games and handle artefacts and Tudor weapons. We also spend a day at The Weald and Downland Museum.

Religious education (RE)

We learn about the beliefs of Hinduism and visit the Shree Ganathapy Temple in Wimbledon.  We also learn about the Christian festivals of harvest and Christmas.

Physical education (PE)

We will experience Tudor dance and there is an opportunity to develop skills in tennis. For the first half of the term, each Thursday afternoon, we go swimming.

Personal, social and health education (PSHE)

We begin the School year with Golden Week in which we remind ourselves of the Golden Rules. This term we nominate and vote for School Councillors. After that we follow the themes of 'New Beginnings' and 'Getting On And Falling Out'.

Art

We look at and produce paintings in the aboriginal style.

Design technology (DT)

We will be making a diorama (3-D scene).

French

Emphasis is on speaking and not on the writing of French.  This will include greetings, numbers, days, months, words linked to everyday life and the family.

You can help at home

Please listen to your child read 4 times a week and help them learn their spellings and tables.

All children must have their clothing named.  It is important that children arrive at School punctually and letters sent to School if your child is away.
