Year 5 Summer term Print E-mail
Introduction

Welcome to the Summer term, where we hope that we will be able to go outside and enjoy the fine weather.

Core curriculum literacy

Our main focus will be persuasive and instructional texts.  We will use these texts as the basis for a variety of reading, writing and speaking and listening activities. We will be working with the text and the film 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' through our film narrative unit.  We will also be exploring poetry.

Numeracy

We will continue to develop our understanding and skills in all areas of numeracy, in particular place value, fractions and decimals as well as our written methods of calculation in all four number operations.  Once again, using and applying our numerical skills and knowledge through our MI5 Investigations is important in our numeracy work.

Science

This term we look at 'changing state' and the 'earth, sun and moon'.

Information Communication and Technology (ICT)

Search engines are used, particularly 'Google' and 'Ask Jeeves' to find information.  In the second half of the term we focus on controlling and monitoring devices and the children have the opportunity to set up instructions to control traffic lights.

Foundation subjects

Geography

We focus on climate and weather and discover the differences between climate and weather as well as examining the affects of the weather on our everyday lives.

Religious Education (RE)

We look at the lives of significant Christians.

Physical Education (PE)

Rounders and athletics are our main outdoor sports this term, supplemented by dance and gymnastics.  We will be preparing for Sports Day, as well as improving our performance in throwing and running.

Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE)

This term we will be looking at relationships within the class, aiming to encourage pupils to support each other and interact positively with their peers.  We will also be showing videos on puberty and human reproduction.  Parents will have the opportunity to see these videos prior to the children seeing them.

Art

To supplement our theme of weather we study water in art as well as creating our own water pictures.

Design and Technology (DT)

This term we make biscuits.  Pupils learn how to make their own biscuits and to alter the recipe to create their own designs.
