School Travel Ambassadors

At Devonshire Primary School, we are committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all members of our community.

We have a travel plan which aims to reduce the number of cars used to take children to and from school each day. This will not only improve the health of our pupils, but also reduce the level of pollution and congestion in the surrounding area and hopefully make the roads safer.

To support the aims of our travel plan we have a working party consisting of members of the Devonshire community who work together to achieve the aims of our travel plan. If you are interested becoming a member of this working party please speak to Mrs Webb or Mrs Archer.

As part of our travel plan we are involved in a number of projects.

WOW (Walking Once a Week)

We encourage children to walk to school at least once a week as part of the London Borough of Sutton Walking Once a Week (WOW) scheme. Children who walk to school at least once a week are rewarded on a monthly basis with a badge. Currently 72% of children walk to school at least once a week, with many walking every day of the week.

Walking to School Weeks are held in May and October each year and during these weeks we encourage the children to walk to school as many times as possible.

Cycle Training

Each year we organise cycle training for our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. In Year 5 the children can participate in a Phoenix Cycling Course which takes place in the school grounds ;and in Year 6 the children can participate in the Cycling Proficiency Course which takes place on the local roads. Both courses are run by the London Borough of Sutton cycle training team.

Cycle Sheds

From the surveys that we have conducted as part of our travel plan review we are aware of the increasing number of children who ride their bicycles to school or who would like to ride their bicycles to school. As part of our travel plan and to support this healthier way of travelling to school we have cycle sheds that children and visitors to the school can use.

Scooter Parking

Many children scoot to school and to support this healthy way of travelling to school we have provided 4 scooter parking pods where children can leave their scooters during the day. There are very well used!
